Art Gallery Co-ordinator
From October 2011 to May 2012 I worked as a part-time freelance gallery co-ordinator for NeST in Barnard Castle, Co. Durham. The role involved sourcing and liaising with artists to co-ordinate a rolling programme of themed exhibitions. During this time I implemented policies, documents and recording systems essential to securing Own Art funding.
I worked with artists from a breadth of creative disciplines to produce interpretive panels to exhibit alongside their work and gave gallery talks/tours to visiting groups. I also built relationships with local organisations, schools and youth groups, networked and engaged in collaborative projects with member artists, registered NeST as an Arts Award provider, extended the stock range to include poetry and initiated an events programme.
My duties included handling both gallery and online sales, updating the website, Facebook and Twitter feeds, designing leaflets, producing newsletters and writing press releases. I gave radio interviews and developed links with the local media.
As the gallery also provides hot-desking facilities, I monitored WiFi bookings, operated scanning, printing and photocopying services, and dealt with I.T. troubleshooting in the absence of the digital animateur.
I worked flexibly to cover evening and weekend events and reported to Barnard Castle Vision CIC’s appointed officer.
On a personal level what I gained most from this role was an awareness of myself as a creative/word artist and the confidence to produce new products such as Haiga cards, which combine verse with digital images. I gained new I.T. skills relating to the use of macbooks, I-macs and social media. This in turn encouraged me to consider online publishing and e-marketing.
