Spring Haiku for Japan Day

May 17, 2014

Japan Day display Northallerton
Today I had the pleasure of being poet in residence for Japan Day at The Forum in Northallerton, North Yorkshire.
As you can see I also had the good fortune to be allotted a table with a beautiful kimono as a backdrop.
Twenty four people of all ages and from as far afield as Northumberland and Lincolnshire tried their hand at creating haiku inspired by Spring.
Their poems are now on display in the foyer of The Forum where they can be enjoyed by people attending this evening’s event by Japanese performance group Kimono World whose show is designed as a tour through the seasons.

The display includes:

‘First raindrops glisten
freshly fallen white petals
caught by dancing winds’
by Lizzie Prediger

‘Spring –
sunshine and showers
bring forth May flowers’
by A. Wilson

‘You left me in Spring
as the rose began to bloom –
so new life begins’
by Marian

One of several composed by myself from observations made during the day reads:
‘parasols unfurl –
paper cranes concertina
through printed silkscreens’

I would also like to say thank you to French poet, Christian Laballery, who took the time to superimpose his haiku over digital images which were well admired.
Christian and fellow photographer Dany Marchand participated in the 16e Printemps des Poetes, details of which can be found on
Next Friday I will be performing with twelve other poets published by Mudfog Press at Café Create, 93-97 Parkgate Chambers, Darlington.
The evening runs from 6-9p.m. and is part of Darlington Literary Festival.
