Recycling your Poetry reads

December 30, 2013

As the old year gives way to the new, this is a great time to think about recycling your poetry reads.
I’ve cleared a dozen pamphlets and anthologies off my shelves to make space for new ones in 2014, and I’ve found a great home for them – the poetry reading group at Darlington’s Crown Street library.
If you live in the area and would like to join a poetry reading group, they meet on the first Wednesday of the month from 2-4p.m. The group has been running for a number of years now and consists of both readers and writers who all share a passion for poetry.
If you live elsewhere you could consider setting up your own poetry reading group or introducing poetry into your book group. A great way to do this and recycle books at the same time is to ask members to donate a title from their bookshelves, bring it to the meeting wrapped in brown paper and swap it for another. This prevents people picking books by their covers and encourages members to read a title that they would not normally choose.
Unwrapping the book during the meeting produces initial responses.
Members should then be asked to read the book at home and give a verbal review of it at the following meeting, perhaps even reading some of their favourite and not so favourite bits. This normally provokes lively discussion and can broaden people’s reading horizons.
If poetry matters to you I can also recommend reading Sheila Wild’s article entitled ‘Poetry Matters’ on pages 48 and 49 of January’s Writing Magazine.
Sheila gives ten tips for bringing poetry into your life in 2014 including finding a reading group near you by logging on to http://readinggroups.org
