Sound and verse

June 28, 2013

As Arctic Monkeys prepare to headline Glastonbury this evening and showcase their version of John Cooper Clarke’s poem ‘I Wanna Be Yours’ which they have set to music for the closing track of their 5th album released later this year, I would like to draw your attention to another forthcoming event which mixes sound and verse.
On the 11th July poet Lisa Matthews will launch and read a selection of work from her new chapbook ’14.’ Lisa will be supported by sound artist Helen Collard. The event takes place at the Lit & Phil library in Newcastle upon Tyne. Examples of Lisa’s work can be found at
On Sunday 14th July at 5p.m. poet Mike Edwards will perform both as ‘The Invisible Man’ and Grim Reaper Dominic Statton at NeST gallery in Barnard Castle. Mike is the 4th in a series of poets to appear at the gallery in partnership with Apples & Snakes, the leading organisation for performance poetry in England.
Mike is a writer and performer from Stockton on Tees who has performed at festivals such as Summer Sundae and The Big Chill. He has also supported John Hegley and John Cooper Clarke.
It will be interesting to find out what Mike makes of the Arctic Monkeys’ version of the poem and how it is received by members of the audience who may have first become acquainted with the verse through the G.C.S.E. syllabus for English.
If you wish to hone your writing skills with regards to character, Mike is giving a workshop on creating characters and writing ‘in character’ prior to his performance. Places can be booked via or telephone 01833 695172. Places are limited and cost £5 per person.
