New Fantasy Poetry Story

May 28, 2013

Fantasy Poetry Story 'Twisting in the Land of Light.'
My new fantasy poetry story ‘Twisting in the Land of Light’ is now available from This is the first of this year’s experiment to explore what I can create by fusing the genres of fantasy and poetry.
Each poem was written separately over many years of travelling to and from Greece. The time span has been condensed by collating them into a narrative based on the Hero’s journey structure often used in fantasy fiction.
In ‘The Writer’s Journey’ (Michael Wiese Productions:2007) Christopher Vogler draws parallels between this and the writer’s journey.
Act One covers: the ordinary world, call to adventure, refusal of the call, meeting with the mentor and crossing the first threshold. I have combined these aspects into the prologue and Day One.
Act Two relates to: tests, allies, enemies, approach to the inmost cave, ordeal and reward. These form the body of my fantasy poetry story which takes the reader on a journey to several different Greek islands where the modern tourist encounters mythological characters and experiences.
Act Three consists of: the road back, resurrection and the return with the elixir. These are explored between Day Seven and the epilogue which introduces a twist in the tale.
In traditional Greek tales this would have occurred on Day Nine of a story covering a ten day period. This is the second structure woven into the story pattern.
I decided to add a Day Zero instead of covering a ten day period so that the final ending becomes the beginning.
This is all very experimental but I would like to know if you think it works. This and other fantasy stories are free to download from my author page at
You might like to consider how you could use the framework of the Hero’s journey in your own work or use the Writer’s journey to track your progress as a writer. For me publishing ‘Twisting in the Land of Light’ is akin to crossing the first threshold. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
