Pantoum Workshop

May 7, 2013

Newcastle Poet Sky Hawkins Newcastle poet Sky Hawkins will be running a poetry workshop on the Pantoum on Sunday 12th May from 4-5p.m. The workshop is scheduled to take place at NeST gallery in Newgate, Barnard Castle. I last had a go at this Malayan verse form some ten years ago. The resulting poem, Suitcase in the Attic, is as follows:
From beneath a raiment of cobwebs comes
the suitcase full of attic treasure –
a sensitive click of the lock beckons
a second glance at wanton pleasure

the suitcase full of attic treasure –
reveals a gypsy skirt of rainbow tones
a second glance at wanton pleasure
frolics, fun, frivolous thoughts have begun.

A well-worn wedding dress of measure –
unfolds in a pearl and lace honeycomb
of creases released once in every year.
Between pale sheets his promises whisper.

As you can see, there are rules to follow with this traditional verse form which should be composed in quatrains which cross-rhyme. Sky will use a step by step approach to guide participants to creating pantoums which they will then be invited to share during a public performance from 5-6p.m.
Sky will also perform work which she is preparing for the Edinburgh festival and share the story of her own journey with poetry. A journey which has seen her win a number of slams and perform live on George Galloway’s T.V. show.
Places for the workshop can be booked by contacting NeST gallery via or telephone 01833 695172
