Sketchbook Project 2013

Sketchbook project 2013 starts tomorrow or it could be today, depending on time zones, as the books are going on tour in America. If you haven’t come across the Sketchbook project before, it is a global art project based at The Brooklyn Art Library in New York but it is also a traveling exhibition. Sketchbooks for the 2013 project start their tour at the library where they will be on display unitl 3rd March. They are then going to Austin, Atlanta, Toronto, Chicago, Portland, SF and LA.
What I love about this project is that it is not just for sketching. Sketchbooks are divided into categories so that you can select one that reflects your artform. Chapbooks were amongst this year’s selection – an ideal platform for poets. I have used mine to showcase poems which complement a new collection due to be published by Mudfog press later this year.
All sketchbooks are handmade books which can be pulled apart, cut, pasted, rebound etc. as long as the finished product does not exceed the book’s dimensions of 5″ wide, 7″ high and 1″ thick. Not being very adventurous when it comes to bookbinding, I kept mine in its original format but pasted in photographs to illustrate poems where appropriate. The photographs are of locations connected with my family history. They were taken during a research trip to track down my Weardale ancestors. Having seen ‘Meet the Izzards’ this week, I now wish I had access to more advanced technology!
The easiest way to find my chapbook is to search via my name at http://www.sketchbookproject.com The book is catalogued at shelf number 196.1-4.
If you fancy putting your own work on tour check out other projects on offer and think about the mood and colour of your work. These aspects are used in the sketchbook’s online profile.
