Poetry & Pints returns to the Georgian

February 2, 2013

On Monday 4th February Poetry & Pints returns to Richmond Georgian Theatre Royal. Swaledale poet Felicity Manning kickstarts the spring programme with readings from Long Held Notes (Mudfog, 2012) and a selection of new work. For me, Felicity paints with words, conjuring the local landscape through her verse. The evening starts at 7.30p.m. and is held in the bar on the 1st floor.
If you haven’t been to a Poetry & Pints evening at the Georgian before, you will find the audience a friendly bunch. No brawling in the pits or talking through the performance as in days of old when the Butlers first opened the theatre in 1787. Tallow candles have been replaced by modern lighting (candlelike in the main auditorium) and the vending range extends beyond the original gingerbread and nuts. You can purchase a pint, or in my case a ginless tonic. Refreshments must be paid for but it doesn’t cost a shilling to get in.
The format for the evening is; the guest poet, a short break, open mic session and guest poet to close. So, if you have put pen to paper recently,(or even quill to ink) take the opportunity to give your words an airing in this unique setting.
If you like what you see and hear and wish to come back for more, poets for future Poetry & Pints evenings are: Bob Beagrie on the 4th March and Marilyn Longstaff on 1st April. Both can be found in the Georgian’s Spring programme which features the return of Mugenkyo Taiko, another of my favourites.
I already have my tickets to see their show The Way of the Drum again. A word of warning – the last time I saw them I was so inspired that I booked a weekend taiko drumming course at their dojo near to Glasgow!
