Summer Writing Challenges

July 23, 2012

Sports kit bag     As summer approaches (the time of year at least, if not the weather) and school breaks up I am putting my sports kit bag together.  Not to participate in any active sport or win any medals but as props to facilitate sports-themed writing exercises.  In August I will be running a series of writing workshops for 7-11 year olds using the Generator game.  This is an online interactive poetry tool designed for the Winning Words Cultural Olympic project.

The workshops form a summer writing challenge to complement the national reading challenge offered by libraries to keep children reading during the summer holidays.  I ran a story writing challenge for Darlington library two years ago.  This time they have invited me back to help Key Stage 2 children to develop their poetry skills.  Each session is free and lasts one hour.  Places can be booked through the library in Crown Street tel: 01325 462034.  They are scheduled for Friday 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th August at 10a.m.

Whatever the weather, for my personal development I will be attending the Hall Garth Poets Summer School 2012 from the 6th to the 9th August.  The summer school takes place in Chop Gate Village Hall, Stokesley and is being led by Mandy Sutter.  I am looking forward to working with a different group of people and seeing what new work I produce as a result.

What are you doing to develop your writing this summer?  Will you be attending a writing retreat, a literature festival, trying your hand at a new artform?  Leave a comment so that we can see the range of activities people undertake to extend their creative practice.
