Artist Biographies

November 7, 2011

Since working as a part-time gallery co-ordinator for NeST digital art gallery in Barnard Castle, I’ve done nothing but write: policies, documents, exhibition lists, leaflets and artist biographies.  There are nine artists exhibiting in the ‘Sense of Place’ exhibition which runs from the 2nd November 2011 to the 8th January 2012.  For further information see http://www.barnardcastlenest.org.uk.

It has been interesting researching how other creative artists work and learning about the processes they go through to create their product.  Everyone is different but the key seems to be to make the initial sketches/drafts/notes etc. on location.  When viewing Lionel Playford’s paintings you can see how he has integrated the colours of found materials such as peat, clay and soil into his work.  Jules Cadie’s mixed media work exudes the feeling of nature.  He lived wild for a year to gain a closer understanding of the elements and incorporates natural materials such as wool into his artworks.

I usually write at home but have found it stimulating to put pen to paper in a different location, although the cafe noise can be distracting when it is busy.  I can recommend the fresh, locally-sourced menu!  Working in the gallery also provides the opportunity to meet other creative people who come in to hotdesk.  Members include artists, journalists, film makers, writers and designers to name but a few.  Well worth exploring membership options if you want a break from working ‘home alone.’

Biographies are the theme of the talk I am giving for Reeth Writers at Hudson House, Reeth this evening.  We will practice writing biographies of different lengths and finish by creating ‘fantasy’ biographies listing our ultimate achievements etc.  Two sites that I have found helpful on this subject are http://www.ehow.com and http://www.absolutewrite.com
