Colour your Writing

September 14, 2011

I travelled to Crook in County Durham yesterday to run a workshop for Crook Writers.  Having passed through every season en route, I arrived in time for the sun to come out.  The group has twenty two members, fourteen of whom were in attendance.  Their normal format is to read and provide feedback on work written from a prompt set the previous week.  Each member takes a turn at leading an exercise. The group publishes an anthology of their work every year.  My aim was to extend their practice and to develop their creative flow, using colour as a stimulus.

We discovered the link between colours, numbers and letters, participated in exercises to add colour and shade to writing, considered the use of colour as an editing tool, and reflected on incorporating colour into writing practice/process. One participant described the workshop as: “A patchwork quilt of delightful ideas.”

On Saturday 15th October, I will facilitate a session on ‘Adding colour to both your life and writing’ during the Lapidus Writing Day Retreat at Cober Hill, Cloughton, Scarborough.  The session includes meditation on the chakras and their respective colours, as well as guided writing exercises that link colours to people, feelings and emotions.  Participants will be encouraged to explore their preferences and to develop their personal palette.
