Writing Retreat Day

July 11, 2011

On Saturday I attended a Writing Day Retreat at Cober Hill near Scarborough.  The day was organised by Kate Evans of Lapidus North Yorkshire, East Riding and North East.  Lapidus is an organisation that promotes creative writing and reading for health and wellbeing.  Cober Hill is a hotel which aims to be a place of refreshment for the soul.  The day was relaxing, informative and inspiring.  Writing and meditation sessions were led by Sue Spencer and Hazel Ettridge.  We read and responded to poetry, then participated in ‘writing from the moment’. We all produced pages of ideas in both poetry and prose.  The weather intruded into our thoughts in the afternoon when torrential thunderstorms tracked across the moors and settled overhead.   Everyone’s mind seemed to pick up on this theme.  I came up with the following:

The fabric of space

tears with a crash

and a flash

as Thor blows bubbles

through the ozone –

For those of you interested in exploring the role of creative development in healing, personal growth and spiritual fulfilment, Kate and Hazel also facilitate residential courses at Cober Hill called ‘The Writer’s Way’.  The next weekend is on Friday 4th to Sunday 6th November.  Details from
