Corfu Highlights

July 5, 2011

Prior to visiting Corfu, I read literature based on or connected to the island i.e. Lawrence Durrell’s Prospero’s Cell and Emma Tennant’s A House in Corfu.  I was already familiar with Gerald Durrell’s work and Homer’s Odyssey.  The setting is a common denominator in all of these stories, so a trip to Paleocastrizza was a must.  Although the bay was breathtaking, I was more inspired by the location of the old fort in Corfu town, another of the stop-offs on the round island tour.  On the plane home I wrote a series of haiku so that you can experience some of the highlights of the island for yourself.  We start with the Sentido Aeolos hotel (the pick-up point), and if you haven’t come across http://hotelhaiku.com, I urge you to take a look at it also.  It has been voted one of the top travel websites and some of the hotels are out of this world, ideal material for fantasy fiction.

Sentido Aeolos

Rises in tiers

from the beach to tennis courts

shaded by olives.

Corfu Town

Saint Spiridon lives

in the Venetian hearts

of Corfiot Greeks.

The Achillion

line the checkerboard courtyard

where the Gods play chess.

Paleocastrizza

The Monastery

Eight monks live here,

herbs proove their absent presence.

Cats litter the path.

The Beach

Lilos ride the waves

like a storm of jellyfish.

Sunbeds nest on shore.

The Shell Museum

Seashells camouflaged

to resemble dinosaurs,

wild cats and zebras.

Souvenirs

Kumquat marmalade,

kumquat jelly, kumquat jam,

kumquat juice, kumquats.
